Funding availability and eligibility may vary. All information is subject to confirmation.

HES Solar Grant Closed June 2024 — No Longer Available

The Home Energy Scotland solar PV grant was permanently closed in June 2024. It is not coming back. Any installer claiming to offer an HES solar grant is providing incorrect information. Solar PV installations in Scotland remain eligible for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027 and for the Smart Export Guarantee. The heat pump grant remains fully live — call 0141 230 0198 to discuss current grant availability.

What HES Registration Means

Home Energy Scotland is the national advice and grant programme for energy efficiency and renewables in Scotland, operated by the Energy Saving Trust on behalf of the Scottish Government.

Approved by the Energy Saving Trust

HES registered installers have been vetted and approved by the Energy Saving Trust, which administers the scheme on behalf of the Scottish Government. Approval requires MCS certification, relevant insurance, and a demonstrated quality track record.

Technical Assessment Authority

Registered installers are authorised to carry out the technical assessment required for grant applications. This includes heat loss calculations, system sizing, and EPC evaluation — all of which form part of the formal grant submission.

End-to-End Application Handling

HES registered installers manage the entire grant application on your behalf — from initial eligibility check and paperwork submission to grant approval and final payment processing. You do not need to interact with the scheme directly.

Grant is paid directly — not as cashback

The HES grant is applied before you pay the installer, reducing your net cost from the outset. You do not pay the full amount and wait for a refund. Your HES registered installer handles this process directly with the scheme.

The HES Installer Search Process

Follow these steps to find a verified HES registered installer and check they are genuinely approved before signing anything.

01

Contact Home Energy Scotland for an Initial Assessment

Call Home Energy Scotland on 0808 808 2282 (free). A trained adviser will discuss your property, current heating system, and whether a heat pump is suitable. This call does not commit you to anything and gives you an objective starting point from the scheme itself.

Free — 0808 808 2282
02

Request a List of Approved Installers

Ask the HES adviser for a list of registered installers in your area. This is the authoritative list — any installer claiming HES registration but not appearing here is not currently approved. The list changes as installers join and leave the scheme, so always use the current version.

Ask for the current approved installer list.
03

Request HES Registration Confirmation in Writing

When you contact an installer, ask them to confirm their HES registration reference in writing. Genuine HES registered installers will provide this without hesitation. Cross-check against the list provided by Home Energy Scotland.

Get the reference in writing.
04

Check MCS Certification Too

All HES registered installers must also be MCS certified. Verify MCS certification independently at mcsinstallers.co.uk. An installer who is HES registered but has lapsed MCS certification is no longer compliant with scheme requirements.

Verify at mcsinstallers.co.uk
05

Get Three Quotes and Compare in Full

Get at least three quotes from HES registered installers. Compare system specifications, heat pump brands, warranty terms, and total cost after grant. Do not compare price alone — a cheaper quote may use a less efficient heat pump or exclude important aftercare.

Get three quotes minimum.

What an HES Registered Installer Handles for You

Eligibility Check

Registered installers assess your property's eligibility before work begins: property type, current heating system, EPC rating, and postcode to determine standard vs rural uplift eligibility. This check is done before you commit financially.

Technical Documentation

Grant applications require heat loss calculations, system sizing specifications, and MCS compliance records. HES registered installers produce this documentation as a standard part of the installation process — you do not need to arrange it separately.

Direct Scheme Relationship

HES registered installers have an established relationship with the Energy Saving Trust. Grant queries are resolved faster, applications move more smoothly, and any scheme changes are communicated to the installer before they reach the public.

Grant Application Submission

The installer submits the application directly. You review and sign the relevant paperwork, but the administrative burden of compiling, submitting, and following up on the application sits with the installer throughout.
