What Is the Smart Export Guarantee?

The SEG is your legal right to be paid for solar electricity you return to the grid. Understanding how it works ensures you choose the best tariff and maximise your returns.

The Smart Export Guarantee was introduced by the UK Government in January 2020 as a replacement for the Feed-in Tariff. Under SEG, obligated energy suppliers — those with 150,000 or more domestic customers — are required by law to offer export tariffs to eligible small-scale generators.

For solar owners in Scotland, this means receiving a payment for every kilowatt-hour of electricity your panels generate but do not use within your home — the surplus exported back to the national grid via your smart meter.

Unlike the Feed-in Tariff, which was set by government at a fixed rate, SEG rates are determined by each individual supplier. This creates competition between providers and means rates vary — from around 3p to over 15p per kWh depending on the tariff and provider.

The key difference from the old FiT is that SEG only pays for what you actually export. There is no assumed export payment — a smart meter reads your actual export and you are paid only for verified exported units.

The Feed-in Tariff closed to new applicants in March 2019. Every new solar installation must use the Smart Export Guarantee for export income. There is no alternative route for new installations.

MCS Certificate Is Non-Negotiable for SEG

Without a valid MCS certificate from an MCS-certified installer, every SEG licensee in the UK will reject your application. There is no workaround.

  • Verify your installer at mcsinstallers.co.uk BEFORE signing any contract
  • The MCS certificate is issued on installation day — ask for it specifically
  • Keep your certificate safe — you will need it for SEG and if you ever sell your home
  • If an installer cannot tell you their MCS number, do not proceed

Best SEG Tariffs in Scotland 2026

SEG rates are set by individual suppliers and change regularly. Here is a comparative guide to the main tariff types available in 2026 and what suits different types of solar owners.

Fixed Rate SEG

3p – 7p / kWh

Best for: Simpler setups without battery

A fixed payment per kWh regardless of time of day or demand. Predictable income, easy to calculate annual earnings. Works well for systems without battery storage where export timing cannot be controlled. Good entry-level option.

Predictable income
Simple to understand
No smart meter optimisation needed
Works with any smart meter
Lower ceiling rate
No peak-time bonus
Less reward for battery owners

Octopus Intelligent Flux

Dynamic — market linked

SEE Standard — Recommended

A fully dynamic import/export tariff designed for solar owners. Pays variable rates for export based on grid demand — higher rates during morning and evening peaks when the grid values solar export most. Also offers reduced import rates during overnight off-peak windows.

Peak-time export bonus rates
Reduced off-peak import rates
Designed for solar + battery
Monthly payment direct to account
Online earnings dashboard
Rate variability (upside and downside)
Works best with battery storage
Requires compatible smart meter

Variable Rate SEG

1p – 15p+ / kWh

Best for: Battery storage owners

Variable rate tariffs track wholesale market prices or grid demand signals. When grid demand is high — typically morning and evening peaks — rates can be significantly higher than fixed tariffs. Battery storage enables strategic export during high-rate windows.

Highest potential rates
Rewards battery optimisation
Responds to market conditions
Transparent pricing signals
Rate uncertainty
Requires active monitoring
Best returns need battery

Rates are indicative as at March 2026 and subject to change. Always verify current rates directly with providers before making decisions.

SEE Standard Tariff

Octopus Flux — Why SEE Recommends It

Scottish Energy Efficiency registers every customer with Octopus Intelligent Flux as standard. Here is why we chose it as our recommended tariff for Scottish solar owners.

Dynamic Export Rates

Flux pays variable export rates that peak during morning (7–9am) and evening (4–7pm) demand windows. Exporting during these periods can earn significantly more per kWh than flat-rate tariffs offer.

Off-Peak Import Savings

The other side of Flux is cheap overnight import rates. If you have battery storage, you can charge from the grid cheaply overnight and use that stored energy — reducing what you import during expensive peak periods.

Designed for Solar + Battery

Flux is engineered specifically for homes with solar panels. Even without battery storage, the export rate uplift at peak times can meaningfully increase annual SEG earnings compared to a fixed-rate tariff.

Monthly Payment

Export earnings are paid monthly directly into your account. A transparent online dashboard shows your generation, export, import, and earnings in real time.

SEG + Battery Storage — The Winning Combination

Battery storage dramatically changes how you interact with the SEG. Without a battery you export whatever your system generates in excess of your immediate consumption. With a battery, you can choose when and how much to export.

Solar Only (No Battery)

Export happens automatically whenever your panels generate more than you are consuming at that moment. You have no control over when export occurs, so with a fixed SEG rate this is straightforward but with a variable rate you may miss peak-rate export windows.

Export occurs in real time — no control
SEG income from actual surplus
Fixed rate tariffs work well
Variable rates less optimised
Simpler setup and monitoring

Solar + Battery Storage

With battery storage, excess solar generation first charges your battery. When the battery is full, remaining surplus exports. You can also programme export timing to align with peak SEG rate windows — and import cheaply overnight if on a dynamic tariff like Octopus Flux.

Self-consumption maximised first
Export timed to peak rate windows
Cheap overnight import for battery charging
Dynamic tariffs work at full potential
Higher overall annual financial return
Energy independence significantly increased

Battery Storage Significantly Boosts SEG Returns

A typical 10kWh battery storage system added to a 4kW solar installation can increase total annual financial benefit from approximately £600–£800 to over £1,000–£1,200 per year when combined with an optimised dynamic tariff.

How to Register for SEG in Scotland

The full SEG registration process from installation to first export payment. When you use Scottish Energy Efficiency, we handle steps 1–4 on your behalf.

1

Get Your MCS Certificate

Your MCS-certified installer issues your MCS certificate on installation day. This is your proof of a compliant installation and is the gateway to SEG. Keep it permanently — you will need it if you ever move home.

SEE issues your certificate on installation day
2

Confirm DNO Notification

G98 or G99 DNO notification must be submitted. The MCS process confirms this has been completed. Without it, MCS certification is not complete and your SEG application will fail.

SEE submits all DNO notifications as standard
3

Confirm Smart Meter

A smart meter must be installed at your property. If you do not have one, contact your energy supplier to request installation. Your supplier is legally required to offer one at no cost.

SEE confirms smart meter status before registration
4

Choose and Apply to SEG Provider

Select a SEG licensee and submit your application with MCS certificate details, system size, installation address, and meter serial number. Most major suppliers offer online applications.

SEE applies to Octopus Flux on your behalf
5

Provider Confirms Registration

Your SEG provider confirms your application, validates your MCS certificate, and registers your meter for export measurement. This typically takes 2–4 weeks.

Provider communicates directly with you post-submission
6

Receive Export Payments

Once registered, export payments begin based on actual smart meter readings. Most providers pay monthly. You can track your export and earnings via your provider's online portal.

How to Switch SEG Provider

You are never locked into a SEG provider. If rates improve elsewhere or a better tariff structure becomes available, switching is straightforward.

1

Compare Current Rates

Check current SEG rates across obligated suppliers. Key providers include Octopus Energy, British Gas, EDF, E.ON, and OVO Energy.

2

Apply to New Provider

Visit the new provider's SEG application portal. You will need your MCS certificate number, system size, installation address, and smart meter serial number.

3

New Provider Validates

The new provider validates your MCS certificate and registers your meter for export measurement. This typically takes 2–4 weeks.

4

Old Provider Notified

Your old SEG arrangement ends when the new one begins. You will receive a final payment for any exports made before the switch date.

No Penalties for Switching

There are no fees or penalties for switching SEG provider. The government scheme is designed to ensure competition between suppliers. Review rates annually and switch if a better offer is available.
