Solar Panel Warranties Scotland — What You Should Demand
A solar installation is a 25-year investment. The warranties that come with it determine what protection you have for the entire life of the system. Know exactly what to demand before you sign anything — and what should concern you when it is missing.

The Three Solar Warranties Every Installation Must Have
Every solar installation has three distinct and separate warranties. They cover different things, are backed by different parties, and have different relevance over the 25-year system life. Understand each before accepting any quote.
Panel Product Warranty
25 Years
Covers manufacturing defects in the solar panels themselves. If a panel fails due to a production fault — cell failure, delamination, junction box failure, frame defects — the manufacturer replaces the panel at no cost within the warranty period. This warranty is backed by the panel manufacturer.
What it covers
What it does NOT cover
Performance Guarantee
25 Years
Guarantees the panel will produce a minimum percentage of its original rated output at year 25. This protects you against excessive degradation — panels losing output faster than expected. Standard guarantees commit to 80% minimum. Premium manufacturers may guarantee 87–92%.
Degradation rates
At 0.5%/yr: 87.5% output at year 25. At 0.7%/yr: 82.5% output at year 25. This difference represents thousands of kWh over the system's life.
Inverter Warranty
10–25 Years
The inverter converts DC power from panels to AC for household use. It is the most mechanically complex and most likely component to require replacement over a system's life. Standard warranty is 5–12 years. Extended warranties to 25 years are available from premium manufacturers.
Inverter warranty by brand
Standard inverter replacement cost: £500–£1,500+. A 25-year extended warranty eliminates this risk for the life of the system.
Labour Warranty — The Fourth Protection Layer
Manufacturer warranties cover components. Labour warranty covers the quality of the installation itself. It is provided by the installing company, not the manufacturer, and is the only warranty that protects against poor workmanship.
What Labour Warranty Covers
If fixings work loose or are incorrectly installed, causing movement or roof penetration issues
Poorly secured or routed cables that fail or create safety risks post-installation
Vibration, heat, or moisture damage caused by incorrect installation location or method
Connections that fail, overheat, or present safety risks due to installation errors
Commissioning errors that prevent the system operating at design specification
Why Labour Warranty Matters in Scotland
Scotland's climate is more demanding than much of the UK. Higher rainfall, stronger winds, freeze-thaw cycles, and occasional extreme weather put greater stress on fixings, cables, and connections than installations in milder climates.
A labour warranty ensures that if any installation-related issue emerges — especially in the first years when workmanship faults become apparent — your installer returns at no cost to rectify it.
Labour Warranty Is Installer-Backed
If your installer ceases trading, your labour warranty may be unenforceable. This is a key reason why RECC membership is critical — RECC provides consumer protection and a formal route for claims even if an installer is no longer in business.
What Voids Solar Warranties
Understanding what can void your warranty is as important as knowing what it covers. Some voiding conditions are within your control — knowing them protects your 25-year investment.
Physical Damage After Installation
Damage caused by falling objects, bird strikes, vandalism, or accidental impact after installation is not covered by product warranty. Building and contents insurance typically covers this type of loss — confirm your solar system is included in your policy.
Unauthorised Modifications
Any alteration to the installed system — adding panels, changing inverter settings beyond manufacturer limits, rerouting wiring — that is not approved by the manufacturer can void the warranty. Always consult your installer before any system changes.
Installation or Removal by Uncertified Persons
If panels or inverters are removed and reinstalled by an uncertified person — for roof work, for example — the manufacturer warranty may be voided. Always use an MCS-certified installer for any roof work that involves your solar system.
Neglect of Maintenance Requirements
While solar panels are largely maintenance-free, manufacturers may specify periodic inspection or cleaning requirements. Failure to follow these — typically very minimal — requirements can give a manufacturer grounds to contest a claim.
Use Outside Specified Operating Conditions
Operating the system outside the manufacturer's specified voltage, temperature, or environmental ranges can void warranties. This is rare in normal Scottish domestic use but relevant for commercial or unusual configurations.
Failure to Register System
Some manufacturers require system registration with the manufacturer portal within a specified period of installation for the full warranty to activate. Your installer should confirm whether registration is required for the specific panel model installed.
Warranty Comparison — Minimum vs Industry vs SEE Standard

Warranty Claim Process — Step by Step
If something goes wrong with your solar system, here is the exact process to follow. Different warranty types have different claim routes.
Document the Issue
Photograph the problem clearly. Check your system monitoring app for output data showing when the issue started. Note any unusual behaviour — error codes, reduced output, physical visible defects.
Contact Your Installer
Your installer is always the first point of contact. They assess whether the issue is a labour warranty matter (workmanship), a manufacturer warranty matter (panel or inverter defect), or an operational issue.
Manufacturer Claim if Component Defect
For panel product or performance warranty claims, the installer submits the claim to the manufacturer with your MCS certificate and installation documentation. The manufacturer inspects and determines if the claim is valid.
Escalate to RECC if Unresolved
If your RECC-registered installer does not respond, refuses a valid claim, or has ceased trading, RECC provides formal mediation and consumer protection. RECC can require remediation, refunds, or compensation.
Keep All Documentation Permanently
Your MCS certificate, warranty documentation, installation manual, and all manufacturer paperwork should be kept permanently — ideally scanned and backed up digitally. You may need these documents 20 years from now. Scottish Energy Efficiency retains copies on file for all customers.
