How Paying for Renewables Works, Step by Step
Paying for home renewables in Scotland comes down to a survey, a written quote, 0% VAT on qualifying installations, Smart Export Guarantee payments for surplus solar, and finance to spread the cost.
How do I pay for renewable energy in my Scottish home?
It starts with a survey and a written quote from an MCS-certified installer. Residential solar PV and heat pump installations currently qualify for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, which reduces the upfront cost. If you generate surplus solar electricity, you can export it to the grid and receive payments under the Smart Export Guarantee. To spread the remaining cost, interest-free credit up to £30,000 is available, subject to status.

Understanding 0% VAT on renewable installations
Residential solar PV and heat pump installations currently qualify for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, reducing the upfront cost of going renewable.
A 0% VAT rate currently applies to the installation of residential solar panels and heat pumps. This means no VAT is added to the cost of qualifying work, which can save a significant amount on a typical installation.
0% VAT currently applies to:
- •Solar PV panels installed on residential properties
- •Air source and ground source heat pumps for home heating
- •Battery storage installed as part of a qualifying solar system
- •Associated installation work such as wiring, mounting and scaffolding that forms part of the job
The 0% VAT rate is scheduled until 31 March 2027. Always confirm the current VAT treatment in your written quote before proceeding.
What is the Smart Export Guarantee?
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays you for surplus electricity your solar panels export to the grid. You choose a tariff from a participating energy supplier and receive payments for each kilowatt-hour exported.
The Smart Export Guarantee is a UK-wide programme that requires energy suppliers with more than 150,000 customers to offer tariffs that pay households for renewable electricity they export to the grid. If your solar panels generate more than you use, the surplus is sent to the grid and you are paid for it.
How SEG Payments Work
Your solar system must be MCS-certified to register. Once registered with an SEG licensee, your export is measured (or estimated) and you are paid per kilowatt-hour at your tariff rate. Payments are typically made quarterly.
Choosing an SEG Tariff
Several energy suppliers offer SEG tariffs, with rates varying between providers. Some offer fixed rates per kWh, while others offer time-of-use tariffs that pay more during peak demand. Compare current SEG tariffs to find the best rate for your export.
MCS Certification Required
To qualify for SEG payments, your installation must be carried out by an MCS-certified installer. This is why we install through MCS-certified partners, ensuring your system is eligible for SEG registration.
Smart Meters and Export
A smart meter with export capability can track exactly how much electricity you send to the grid. Some suppliers also offer deemed export rates if you do not have an export meter, based on your system size.
What does the process look like?
The process is straightforward: arrange a survey and written quote, have your system installed by MCS-certified partners, then register for SEG payments and arrange finance if needed.
Survey and Written Quote
An MCS-certified installer surveys your property, assessing roof direction, shading, insulation and your energy use. You then receive a detailed written quote covering system size, cost and expected performance.
Includes: site assessment, system recommendation and itemised pricing
Installation Through MCS-Certified Partners
Once you accept the quote, your system is installed by MCS-certified partners. MCS certification ensures the installation meets industry standards and qualifies for Smart Export Guarantee registration.
Includes: professional installation, commissioning and MCS certificate
SEG Registration and Finance Arrangement
After installation, your MCS certificate allows you to register with an SEG licensee to start receiving payments for exported electricity. If you are spreading the cost, finance arrangements are finalised at this stage.
Includes: SEG registration with your chosen supplier and finance setup if required
From start to finish: Most installations are completed within a few weeks of the initial survey. The exact timeline depends on system complexity, weather and installer availability, but the process is far simpler than it once was.
Why do written quotes matter?
A written quote gives you a clear, itemised breakdown of costs, system specifications and what is included, so you can compare offers and make an informed decision.
A written quote is your most important document when planning a renewable installation. It sets out exactly what you are paying for, the system being installed, and the terms that apply.
A good written quote should include:
- ✓Itemised costs including equipment, labour and any additional work
- ✓System specifications: panel capacity, inverter type and battery size if applicable
- ✓Confirmation that 0% VAT has been applied where eligible
- ✓MCS certification details and warranty information
What finance options are available?
Interest-free credit up to £30,000, subject to status. Combined with 0% VAT and SEG payments, finance can make renewable installation affordable without a large upfront payment.
Interest-Free Credit
Interest-free credit up to £30,000, subject to status. This allows you to spread the cost of your installation over manageable monthly payments without paying interest.
